We regret to announce the death of Mr. Maxie Benjamin who transitioned on Tuesday, February 6, 2024.
Maxie Benjamin, affectionately known as McBee, led a life defined by hard work, faith, and a deep love for his family. Born on November 15, 1940, in Effingham, SC, he was the eldest son of Maxie Benjamin II and Verlin Benjamin. Growing up in a large family of 12 children, Maxie learned the value of responsibility and dedication from an early age.
Throughout his life, Maxie embarked on various journeys, living in different cities such as Washington D.C., Philadelphia, PA, and Columbia, SC. Despite the distances, his heart always remained tied to his hometown of Effingham. In his later years, he made the decision to return, longing to be close to his family and his roots.
Maxie's faith was a cornerstone of his life. He accepted Christ as his personal savior early on and remained a loyal member of Savannah Grove Baptist Church. His dedication to his faith was mirrored in his work ethic. Maxie was known for his reliability and hard work, rarely taking time off even as he aged. He found fulfillment in his job at Fort Jackson Military Base in Columbia, SC, where he worked tirelessly until he was almost 80 years old.
Cooking brought Maxie immense joy. Whether it was preparing meals at work, in his home, or for family gatherings, he poured his heart into every dish. Fishing was another passion of his, and he cherished every opportunity to cast his line into the water, whether it be in a pond, lake, or the ocean.
Above all else, family held the highest priority in Maxie's life. He was a devoted father to his only son, Lee A. Benjamin, and took immense pride in his role as a grandfather to Lee's ten children. Maxie's love extended to his ten siblings, numerous relatives, and friends, all of whom held a special place in his heart.
On February 6, 2024, Maxie Benjamin departed this life, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, faith, and love. Though he may have left this world, his memory lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Please keep the Benjamin family in your thoughts and prayers during their time of bereavement.
