Maxine Hutson Curry (Max), 75, of Johns Island, South Carolina, passed away on Sunday, March 8, 2026.

Maxine was born on August 20, 1950, in Charleston, SC. She was the daughter of the late Jeanette Hutson (Colson) and Raymond B Hutson. Maxine grew up on Johns Island with her sister and three brothers, where she rode horses, ran barefoot in the dirt, and snuck grapes off the neighbors vines. As the eldest of five , she was a fine "supervisor" and took her fair share of teasing for it.

Maxine graduated from St. John's High School in 1971, where she spent her Friday nights hoisting a megaphone, cheering under the lights. Over the years. she served many patrons throughout the low country, meeting people from all over. Notably, The Sanitary Restaurant on Folly Beach and St Johns Cafe on Johns Island. She didn't know a stranger and always had a kind word.

Maxine loved being out on the river, where she'd go fishing, crabbing, and shrimping. She spent every free moment she could at Folly Beach, tanning and enjoying margaritas with life long and new friends alike. She loved her family and friends, and treasured her grandchildren and grandnephews.

Maxine is preceded in death by two brothers, Rodney Glenn Hutson and Harold Charles Hutson (Charlie); a sister Judy H. Garcia; and a niece Dana D. Davis.

Maxine is survived by her loving brother, Ronald V Hutson; her favorite daughter , Sonya (Shaun) Adams, a loving niece, Cassie Gail Wilson, and her only son , Amos Lee Curry III, her beloved grandchildren Alyssa and Amos and her special grandnephews RJ, Caleb and Gabe.

Information regarding a future celebration, honoring her memory will be shared when available.
