MAXINE MAY HOLLAND
May 7, 1924, to October 26, 2025
Maxine was described by many as an exceptional example of "how to grow old gracefully." A caring friend, an elegant dresser, a sharp thinker, Maxine was known for many qualities, notably her great spirit and longevity. At 81 she learned to haggle with carpet sellers in Beijing, two years later she tried air ballooning, and at 89 enthusiastically joined a safari in Africa. In her mid 90s she travelled to London and to San Francisco for the christenings of great-grandsons.
Maxine's early life was less exotic. She was born in Ottawa, Kansas, to Max and Athena Ward. At 20, Maxine transferred to the U. of M., excelling in math and graduating with honors in Business Administration. She was elected to the Tri Delta Sorority where she made lifelong friends. At the U, she met Dr. Mellor Holland, an oral surgeon; they married after graduation, settled in Minnetonka and raised four children. During these years, Maxine continued to make lasting friendships in her community, even on the tennis court where her talents were modest.
Maxine was a very well-organized person, and her skills were an asset over the years to several volunteer groups and to her church. She was also meticulous, keeping a beady eye on life's details. Well-ironed tea towels, for example. Matching jackets and scarves. A perfectly made bed. Despite this penchant for perfection, Maxine could be surprisingly open to the messy side of life, bravely tolerating the imperfect housekeeping of her daughters, and gamely coping with the challenges of travel.
Maxine died peacefully at 101 years old in Wayzata at Folkestone Senior Living, her home for her last 11 years, where she was known for her open door and generous welcome to newcomers. She kept a wide circle of friends, loved the many visits from her children and grandchildren and lived for her twice-weekly bridge games, with a win only six days before her death. She is survived by her children Kristine de Juniac (Christian), Dr. Cynthia Browne (Kingsley), Elizabeth Lewis (John) and David (Mary Ruth), 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Wayzata Community Church on 22 November at 11.00 a.m.
Maxine was predeceased by her loving husband Mellor after 57 years of marriage. Her family wants to thank her wonderful friends of recent years and her lovely caregivers who made her last three years so comfortable. Memorials are preferred to Wayzata Community Church or to the University of Minnesota.
