MOULTRIE, GA – Maxwell Gary Hancock, 91, of Moultrie, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 12, 2025, while surrounded by family at Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville, GA.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at Trinity Baptist Church. Rev. Nick Dawson and Rev. Hugh Ward will officiate.
Casketbearers are Mike DeMott, Durwood Dominy, Wayne McKellar, Jeff Jursik, Greg Allen and Tom Faircloth
The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at Cobb Funeral Chapel.
Private family interment will be at Cobb-Suncrest Memorial Gardens.
Born on November 9, 1933, in Sparks, GA, he was a son of the late Mack Gary Hancock and Myrtle Rountree Hancock. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Michael Garry Hancock, and sister, Mary Elizabeth Hancock.
He honorably served in the United States Air Force. He later graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. A pharmacist for many years, he was once a co-owner of Watson Pharmacy. He also worked for many years in quality control at Miller Brewing Company.
A dedicated Christian, he was a faithful member of Trinity Baptist Church.
Max cared deeply about his community and the people who lived there. He was a member and served as Chair or President of the following organizations: Thomasville Exchange Club, Thomasville Jaycees, Deep South Fair, Exalted Ruler of the Moultrie Elks Club, Colquitt County Board of Education, Colquitt County Commissioners, Sunset Country Club, Pot O’ Gold Pro Am Tournament. He was also the Moultrie Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year in 2006.
He was heavily involved in local and state government. As a County Commissioner he advocated, created and chaired committees for many projects including curbside pickup for solid waste in Colquitt County and bringing Sanderson Farms to Moultrie. He was also a key advocate in the 4-laning of Highway 133 between Moultrie and Valdosta. During Gov. Roy Barnes tenure, he was appointed to the Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority and served as chairman under Gov. Perdue.
In his free time, Max was an avid golfer and gardener.
A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by his wife, Amelia “Mickie” Hughes Hancock to whom he was married for almost 70 years; a daughter, Susan Hancock Dickerson (husband, Emory); granddaughters, Megan Fleetwood (husband, Drew) and Kelsey Dickerson (fiancé, Devin Scott); great-grandsons, Max Fleetwood and Charlie Fleetwood.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity.
Cobb Funeral Chapel has been entrusted with arrangements.
