Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wimberly Funeral Home on Oct. 20, 2025.
Maya Tiara Viust, 27, was born June 12, 1998 in Houston, TX and departed this life on October 14, 2025.
A sweet and deeply thoughtful soul, Maya was known for her creativity, intelligence, and quiet wisdom. She was a proud alumna of Fair Street Elementary, where she attended kindergarten. She graduated from Norcross High School in 2016 with Honors and was in the dual enrollment program with Georgia Gwinnett College. Afterwards, she graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology in 2020 with a B.S. in Computer Science with High Honors (Magna Cum Laude).
After college, Maya relocated to the Bay Area where she worked for 3 years as a software engineer at Black Rock, Inc. in San Francisco, California. She decided to re-enroll at Georgia Gwinnett College in order to purse a career as a clinical psychologist, which reflected her deep empathy and lifelong curiosity about the human mind. She was a member of the Psi Chi Honor Society and was expected to graduate in December 2025. She was posthumously awarded a B.S. in Psychology.
From a young age, Maya found comfort and joy in the arts. She was an avid reader, often lost in books that took her to new worlds. Her love of writing and drawing was a window into her vivid imagination and emotional depth. Her journals, sketches, and short stories remain as lasting reminders of her beautiful mind and sensitive spirit.
Maya was a beloved daughter, granddaughter, great-granddaughter, niece, cousin, and friend. While many people didn't get a chance to know Maya on a deeper level, those who did admired her quiet wisdom, sharp thinking, and respectful manners. And though her life was short, her impact will be lasting.
Her passing is a deep reminder of the importance of mental health and the unseen struggles many carry. We grieve not only for the loss of her presence, but also for the dreams and chapters of her life that will remain unwritten.
Maya was preceded in death by her special great-aunt Rosalyn Turner; grandfather Hector Viust, Sr.; and great-grandparents John (Ruby Lee) Turner, Cirilo (Inocencia) Rivera, Enrique (Rosa) Viust, and Robert Marshall.
Left to cherish her memory are her mother, Tara Turner; father, Hector Viust; special friend, Jose Sanchez; special cousin Stephanie Pickens; bonus mother Kristel Caniquitte; grandparents, Ilma Rivera, Barbara Turner, and Emory Turner; bonus grandmother Elise Dorrifourt; great-grandmother Bernice Marshall; special friend, Jose Sanchez; uncles Travis Turner, Derrick Turner, Alexander Viust, and Sean Rivera; bonus uncle Christophe Caniquitte; first cousins Jalen, Jasmine, Gage, Noel, and Symone; great-aunts Martha Mays, Martha Sharay Marshall, Daphne Marshall, Carmen Rivera, and Maria Rivera; great-uncles Asberry Turner, Johnny "Tuck" Turner, Charles "Doug" (Clara) Turner, Alfonso (Yvette) Marshall, Pedro "Juanito" Rivera, Jose Rivera, Manuel Viust, and a host of other relatives and friends who will continue to honor her memory by advocating for mental health awareness and supporting others in need.
Maya is at peace now, and surrounded by the beauty she so often sought to create in the world
