Mayme Julia Murphy, a beloved matriarch and cherished friend to many, laid her crown at the Lord's feet on Sunday, January 4, 2026, just shy of her 99th birthday. Born on January 14, 1927, in
Columbia, South Carolina, Mayme was the daughter of Frank Williams and Marie Young. Her life journey, rich with love, faith, and resilience, spanned nearly a century, during which she touched countless lives.
Mayme's formative years were spent in the nurturing environment of Columbia, where she received her education in the public schools of Richland County. As a young woman, Mayme carried the values instilled in her by her parents-hard work, kindness, and an unwavering faith in God. These principles guided her throughout her life and into her professional career.
In 1989, after many years of dedicated service, Mayme retired from the Duval County School Board, where she served as a Food Service Manager. Her work was not just a job; it was an extension of her nurturing spirit, a way to care for the children and families in her community.
Mayme was a devoted member of the Greater Macedonia Baptist Church, where she served on the Usher Board and participated in numerous activities that fostered fellowship and community. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life, providing her with strength and a deep sense of purpose. She was known for her warm smile, compassionate heart, and her ability to uplift those around her.
In addition to her commitment to her community and church, Mayme had a passion for the Jacksonville Jaguars, and she loved cheering for her team, a testament to her vibrant spirit and enthusiasm for life.
Mayme's legacy is carried on by her loving family. She is survived by her children, Larry Murphy (Sherell), Mylinda Johnson, James Murphy, Jr. (Bridgett), and Jerry Murphy (Robert). Her grandchildren, including Kristen Lacey, Mariette Murphy, Larry Murphy Jr. (Jamie), Gregory Gipson Jr., Laondria Johnson, Jazmine Murphy-Swanson (Jalen), Colayahn Chandler, Yasmeen Chandler, Jamarius Murphy, and Zachariah Murphy, are a testament to the love she nurtured in her family. Additionally, she is survived by sixteen great-grandchildren, who will remember her warmth and wisdom, as well as her in-law, Geri Taylor, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many sorrowing friends.
Mayme was preceded in death by her beloved son, John Murphy; her daughter, Marvetta Murphy-Calliar; her parents, Frank Williams and Marie Young; and her siblings: brothers Frank Williams and Charles Taylor; and sisters Lucille Zimmerman, Eltora Maddox, Annie Mae Taylor-Anderson, and Susie Mae Taylor. Her absence will be felt deeply by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Mayme Julia Murphy's life was a testament to love, faith, and family. She will be profoundly missed but fondly remembered for her enduring spirit and the countless lives she touched with her love. May she rest in peace, wrapped in the arms of her Savior.
