Maynard Carl Akkerman, age 69, of Brownsdale, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester, MN, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on November 26, 1955, in Austin, MN, to Don and Marlys (Dunker) Akkerman, Maynard grew up in rural Brownsdale with two sisters and two brothers. He was active in 4-H and developed a lifelong love for the outdoors and hands-on learning. He attended Trinity Lutheran School and Holy Cross, graduated from Hayfield High School in 1973, and proudly earned his education from the “School of Hard Knocks.”

On October 21, 1978, Maynard married the love of his life, Robin (Huemann) Akkerman. Together, they built a life rooted in family, faith, and hard work. Maynard dedicated his life to Akkerman Inc., where he was involved from birth, and his passion for the company was evident to all who knew him.

Maynard was a globally recognized leader in the trenchless industry whose innovations and dedication left a lasting mark on the infrastructure community. His career was distinguished by numerous honors, including induction into the NASTT Hall of Fame (2019), The Moles (2009), and being named Trenchless Technology Person of the Year (2008). He also received the Microtunneling Achievement Award (2016) and was proud to have Akkerman equipment featured in the 2007 New Installation Project of the Year. These accolades reflected not only his technical excellence but also his personal integrity and leadership. Maynard’s contributions helped shape the future of the trenchless industry and inspired countless professionals in the field.

Maynard was a man of many talents and interests. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, a stock car and drag racer, and the proud 2019 Strip Eliminator 1 Champion at Brainerd International Speedway with his beloved 1965 Belvedere, “KONG.” He loved motorcycle trips out West, fishing adventures in Canada, and deer hunting at the family hunting lodge with his sons, family and friends. He cherished ranger rides and boating with his grandchildren, time at the cabin, and traveling with Robin. Above all, Maynard loved his family, his friends, and his faith. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith and remained a devoted member throughout his life.

Maynard is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Robin; his children, Derek (Dawn), Justin (Heidi), and Andrew (Abby); and his eight treasured grandchildren, Ollie, Owen, Aubrey, Grant, Stella, Evalyn, Flynn, and Easton. He is also survived by his sisters, Ruth (James) Fandrey and Barb (Wade) Kester, and many other cherished family members and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Marlys Akkerman; his brothers, Kenny, Martin, and Wayne Akkerman; and his in-laws, Jean and Elden Huemann.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 25, 2025, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Worlein-Hoff Funeral Home in Austin, MN, and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
