Mayree King Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sharpe Funeral Home, Inc. on Feb. 9, 2026.
Ms. Mayree King, 75, passed away peacefully into our Lord's eternal care on February 6, 2026, surrounded by her family. She was born on February 6, 1951, in Burlington, North Carolina, to Samuel Jacob King and Martha Elizabeth Covington King. In addition to her parents, Mayree was preceded in death by two brothers, Rudy Lee King and David King

Mayree received her early education in Alamance County, graduating in 1969 from Central High School in Graham, North Carolina. She attended Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina, and Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina. She was a trained certified nursing assistant and worked at Memorial Hospital and Graves Family Care Home for many years.

Mayree was an avid writer and she loved to read the King James Bible. She was a three-time independently published author with books to her credit: The Turtles and the Butterfly Volumes 1 & 2, and The Iron Furnace of God. Mayree was blessed with extraordinary gifts coupled with acts of kindness and perseverance.

Mayree was a gifted cook, many of us still remember her delicious persimmon pudding. She delighted in celebrating her loved ones, faithfully mailing birthday, Easter, Christmas, and holiday cards to mark every special occasion.

She loved traveling to sporting events and cheering on her grandchildren, never missing a single graduation from high school or college. She once traveled all the way to Iowa just to help her grandson move into his college dorm; that was quintessential Mayree, always caring, always asking her children repeatedly, "Do you have a hat on your head? It's too cold for you not to have on a coat."

She enjoyed both collecting and creating art, amassing a cherished collection of unique books, stoneware, and furniture. Mayree was a remarkable gift-giver, often searching local thrift stores for treasures to share with others. When she knew her granddaughter loved butterflies, she didn't buy just one butterfly she bought twenty beautiful, unique butterfly brooches with various stones, carefully pinned to a gorgeous tapestry and neatly placed in a keepsake box.

Mayree was not just a gift-giver, but someone who took the extra step to make your card, your gift, special just for you. Mayree loved New York and all it represented. She often reflected on her time there with family and friends enjoying the World's Fair, street vendors, and the famous pizza. She revisited New York in later years, taking in the sights and sounds of her beloved city with leisurely strolls.

Although she enjoyed traveling, nothing meant more to her than the cherished memories of times past with those she loved. Mayree often spoke of her time in the log cabin, learning on the farm, and playing at the Flat Rock. Mayree lived her 75 years facing trials and tribulations with unwavering faith and strength.

Through seasons of hardship and sorrow, she persevered with grace, leaning on her deep faith in God's word and finding comfort in His promises. She weathered life's storms with resilience, always rising to meet each challenge with courage and determination. Her strength became a testament to those around her, showing that even in the darkest valleys, faith could light the way forward.

On her 75th birthday, the Lord called her home. As Jesus promised in John 14:2-3, "In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also." Mayree's time on earth was complete, and she has been received into the place prepared for her, where her perseverance has been rewarded with eternal rest.

Surviving to cherish her memory is one son, Delroy Hudson, Sr. of Burlington; two daughters, Tiffanie King of Burlington and Stefanie Leak (Carl) of High Point, North Carolina; eleven grandchildren: Dominique, Delroy Hudson Jr. (DJ), Jakari, Laila, Kevion, Tye'reke, Jamarion, Kira, Jalen, Travita, and Terry; one great-grandson Kynston; two sisters, Allegra Albright (Darrell) Town of Green Level, North Carolina, and Frances Logan of Concord, North Carolina; two brothers, George King of Burlington and John King of Charlotte, North Carolina; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
