Melinda G. Ewers, age 57, went to be with the Lord on April 23, 2025, at her home in Pensacola, Florida. She was born in Mason City, Iowa, on October 11, 1966. Her parents, Virgil D. and Marlene L. Genzler, decided to move their family to Florida to get away from the cold and snow. Melinda, also known as Mindy, decided that crystal blue waters and unbearable humidity were stuck in her veins, so she became a resident of Okaloosa County.
Growing up in Destin, Florida, Mindy loved to tell stories about her childhood, long before Crab Island went underwater. One of her favorite stories was of her brother, Daniel, and her swimming from the coast of Destin to the little island for fun as kids.
Being a proud mechanic's daughter and a true Floridian who was well-versed in hurricanes, she never feared a tool. She knew about tools, spark plugs, and auto repairs. She had the drive to learn how to tackle any job, task, or anything that needed fixing.
Mindy's loving heart guided her to provide love and care to many friends and family. Her instinct was to help-whether it be family, friends, or strangers. Her tender compassion extended far beyond humans, as many animals found a home at Mindy's house. Mindy's love for animals and their well-being compelled her to open her home to all four-legged animals in need.
The joy in Mindy's life was most noticeable when she had reunions with her sisters. They were all filled with love, laughter, and uplifting voices that could be heard blocks away.
Mindy's death was preceded by her husband, Richard Ewers, brother Daniel Genzler, father Virgil Genzler, sister Lori Genzler, Mother Marlene Genzler, sister Lisa Genzler, numerous dogs, cats, ferrets, and one iguana. She is survived by her daughters Katrina Kyllo and Anastasia Becerra, sister, Gina Keeper, grandsons Caleb Clarke and Elio Becerra, granddaughter Olive Becerra, numerous nieces and nephews, a helpful friend, Michael Weaver, and a dog named Jax.
