On the early morning hours of May 24, at 2:29 AM heaven welcomed Ellen Dawson Ewers. An angel on earth that will always be remembered for her gentle nature, her tireless dedication and unwavering love for her family, friends, and community. Born on February 13th, 1957, the first born of a set of twins to James and Vivian Dawson of Woodstock GA, forever to be known in Cherokee County as the "Dawson Twins." Ellen and her twin, Helen added to the growing Dawson family joining Alice and Eddie, later the family would be completed with Beth, Paula, and Bobby. The community would soon be very aware of the "Dawson twins," from their school activities to state championship basketball teams. Ellen and Helen made their mark with their athletic talents and charisma. Ellen went on to play basketball at the collegiate level at Berry College where she earned her degree, Bachelor of Science in Physical Education, and she coached in several area high schools including North Cobb and her beloved alma mater Cherokee High School. Ellen's deep caring and comforting nature led her to further her education to become a high school counselor and once again she made her mark on thousands of high school students, faculty, and staff in Cherokee County at Sequoyah and Creekview High Schools. The sparkling green-eyed Ellen met the love of her life, Tony, an Oklahoma boy with two beautiful young daughters, Mysha and Morgan, on a blind date that started at the airport baggage claim after months of long distant phone conversations. Their love story moved swiftly, and soon they were in love and an engagement on a mountaintop in Colorado quickly ensued. They were married on July the 13, 1996 at a beautiful wedding at the Tate House. The biggest pride and joy of Ellen's life was the birth of their son, Dawson Wade Ewers. Ellen was a fabulous mother to her big brown eyed boy. Her devotion to Dawson was unmatched from their home to any sports venue, Ellen was there leaving her mark coaching, caring, and raising a very fine young man. Ellen retired from Cherokee County school district in December 2012. In the giving ways of Ellen, she worked continuously on many civic levels from her class reunion committee to being a Cherokee Sports Hall of Fame inductee and board member, and for the Citizens Review Panel for CASA/The Children's Haven. She was always leaving her mark on her own in her community. Another great joy of Ellen's life was being Minnie to her five grandchildren, a supportive aunt to her niece and nephews, and a constant voice of reason to her many friends. She enjoyed trips to Disney, the beach, and skiing in Colorado. Ellen's easy nature made her a great traveler, and she loved to go! She never met a stranger and spread kindness like confetti everywhere she went. Ellen and Tony's next chapter of their love story was to be in Mexico Beach making more new memories with their family and friends, but Ellen became ill. She was a true fighter for the last weeks of her life, leaving her special touch through the voices of those who talked about her to all the hospital staff. Ellen Dawson Ewers will be greatly missed by her loving husband, her adoring son and daughter-in-love, her precious sisters and brother, admiring daughters and grandchildren plus a large loving extended family, cousins and by everyone that had the privilege of calling her friend... and that's a lot of folks. From those she played sports with to those she taught, coached, or counseled; she was there leaving her caring mark. Ellen gave the best hugs in the county for 68 years, first to Sissy sharing the womb together and then to everyone else blessed enough to cross her path. Her legacy will be felt for generations to come for all the "marks" she has made and given so freely and without any want of reward. She was simply the best and uncomplicated in any situation…She loved big, and she hugged big… and Ellen would want you to do the same.
