Mellissa Alishia Thomas, affectionately known as "Dimples," was born in Jacksonville, Florida, and passed away peacefully in Orlando, Florida, at the age of 53.
Mellissa was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose bright smile and outgoing personality touched everyone she met. She is survived by her loving daughter, Serennah Thomas; her cherished grandson, Ace Phillips; her sister, Danielle Campbell; her nephew, Michael Ellis Jr. (MJ); and her niece, Zimiah McElvin. She now rejoins her mother, Joyce Blackman, in eternal rest.
A proud 1989 graduate of William M. Raines High School, Mellissa went on to pursue higher education with a deep passion for learning and growth. She studied Technical Management at DeVry University and Software Engineering at Strayer University.
She built a strong career, beginning at Publix, serving as an administrative assistant at Lakeside Behavioral Health, and later working as an employment specialist and correction officer with Bridges of Jacksonville. Even looking back over Mellissa's career path, it is clear she lived her purpose by waking up each day and serving those she came in contact with - from individuals impacted by the criminal justice system to those suffering from mental illness. It takes a special kind of person, with a truly big heart, to fill such important roles, and Mellissa embraced that calling with dedication and compassion.
Mellissa also carried a vision and passion for entrepreneurship. One of her first ventures was Precious Joy of Computers, a business name that beautifully combined her daughter's middle name with the first half of her mother's first name. In later years, she continued her entrepreneurial spirit through her work on Indigenous Suites.
Mellissa loved life and the people around her. Her hobbies included working with computers, spending time with her grandson Ace, and traveling. She also enjoyed playing spades, sharing laughter, and creating joyful memories with family and friends. Always outgoing and full of energy, she had a gift for bringing people together and brightening every room she entered.
Her love, laughter, and resilience will forever be remembered by those whose lives she touched. Mellissa's legacy of family, friendship, service, and joy will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
