Mel was born on the family farm to John and Signa Baker. He was delivered at home by his grandmother. He grew up on the farm, working alongside his dad and brothers. He graduated from Mead High School in 1948. He participated and lettered in multiple sports and won a Golden Glove in boxing. After graduation, he started working at Kaiser Aluminum Mead Works. After a couple of years, he enlisted in the USAF. He spent four years stationed in California, Texas, Alaska, Kimpo, South Korea, and finally, Fairchild Air Force Base. He was honorably discharged and went back to work at Kaiser for 43 years. He married Fonda Clarke in 1957 and they had two children: Lisa Cummins and Dale Baker. Mel was a very gentle and patient man, who loved his family dearly. He loved to hunt, fish, and spend time on the farm. Mel was blessed with five grandsons: John Baker, Luke Baker, Ryan Baker, David Layne, and Kyler Layne. He also has 11 great-grandchildren whom he adored. He is survived by his son, Dale (Bobbie) Baker; and multiple nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Signa Baker; brothers, Lou Baker, Lyle Baker, and Jack Baker; sister, Alene Congheton; and daughter, Lisa Cummins. To honor Dad, we ask that you wear your favorite hat. Services will be held at 11am on Friday, February 6, at Riplinger Funeral Home, 4305 N. Division St.

Dear Dale and Family,
I only knew your dad through Jack and Raloyce. I always found him to be friendly, soft spoken, courteous, and a true gentleman. He certainly lived a rich and full life. I'm sorry for your loss. You are on my mind as you grieve his loss. My hope is that fond memories will sustain you as you adjust to life without him.
Sincerely,
Paddy Inman

DALE, We are very saddened to hear your Dad has passed. We miss seeing him working in the yard and going for his walks. We miss both he and your Mom. We think of them often. Charlie and Kathy
