Melvin Jay Cyphers, age 91, of
Murrysville, PA, formerly of Penn Hills, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 21, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.
Known to many simply as "Jay," he was the devoted husband of the late Sweetie Cyphers, who preceded him in death in 2023. Together, they built a life full of love, laughter, and family. Jay was a beloved father to Cheryl Bevilacqua, Mary Ann Hall (Adam), and Janet Merlino (Ted); a proud grandfather to Nicole Bevilacqua Able (Mike) - who also preceded him in death - Kristen Fox (Joe), Brian Bevilacqua, Michael Bevilacqua (Tiffany), Sara Mendjour (Nas), Melody Hall (fiancé Joe), Adam Hall, Matthew Merlino (Tori), and Mark Merlino (Mariah); and a cherished great-grandfather to Cameron, Colton, and Connor Fox, Angelo, Giavanna, and Santino Bevilacqua, and Micah Merlino and his soon to be sister in the spring and Wesley Merlino.
Jay's long career in finance, including many years at Legg Mason as Treasurer, reflected his sharp mind and tireless work ethic. He was known for his quick calculations and deep understanding of numbers, a skill that remained with him throughout his life.
Outside of work, Jay enjoyed the simple pleasures that brought him closer to others: bowling, once coming just one pin short of a perfect 300 game, and playing cards with family and friends. He had a remarkable wit and a love for meaningful conversation, often brightening rooms with both his humor and wisdom.
Jay valued connection above all. His home was always open, his counsel always sincere, and his loyalty unwavering. His strength of character and gentle heart touched many, and the impact of his life will be felt for generations to come.
Sweetie and Jay shared a deep, compassionate love that radiated to everyone around them. In retirement, they found joy in traveling together with family and friends. From countless casino trips filled with laughter, good food, and even better desserts, to unforgettable adventures abroad. One of the most cherished memories was the time they brought their entire family to Cancun Mexico for their 50th wedding anniversary, creating moments that will be treasured forever by the entire family.
Though we mourn his absence, we also honor Jay by remembering the joy, the love, and the strength he shared. His spirit will live on through the hearts of those who loved him best.
Visitation for Jay will be on Thursday, September 25, 2025, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Hart Funeral Home, Inc., in Murrysville, followed by a chapel committal service at Twin Valley Memorial Park in Delmont.
