Melvin Ferrell, age 77, of
Stopover, KY, passed away early Sunday morning, December 28, 2025, while an inpatient in the Pikeville Medical Center of
Pikeville, KY. He was born on April 28, 1948, in
Majestic, KY, a son of the late John C. and Hattie (Sanson) Ferrell. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his three brothers, Roy George Ferrell, Larken Ferrell, and his twin brother, Stuart Ferrell; and a nephew, Keith Stump.
Melvin was a faithful member of Stopover Freewill Baptist Church. He spent about 40 years in the mining industry and retired from Caney Branch Coal Company. Melvin also proudly served the community as a Pike County Deputy Sheriff for more than 40 years. Melvin loved going to church and spending time with his family, especially playing with his grandchildren. He enjoyed riding ATVs when he was able, taking road trips to Pigeon Forge, TN, and Georgetown, KY, and he took great pride in keeping his yard and grass neat and well kept.
Melvin is survived by his loving wife, Ann Jean (Cline) Ferrell; his son, Hershel Rife and his fiancé, Angela Wolford; his daughter, Traci Ferrell; his sister, Janie Lou Hurley and her husband Eddie; and his grandchildren, Colby Stump (Brittany Smith), Haley Diamond (Andrew Cordray), Cambria Smith (Rebeca Monraga), Kentlie Smith, Kiana Ferrell, and Kylie Ferrell and her fiancé, Drake Potter. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Zayden Stump, Berkley Stump, Asher Mitchum, Laikyn Cordray, Layne Cordray, Theodore Marcial Monraga, and Shiloh Reign Richardson. A host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family, and friends also survive him.
Melvin also leaves behind special friends who meant so much to him: Larry and Lois Lester, Ronnie and Hattie Lester, Howard Keith Hall, Bert Hatfield, Randall Prater, Tommy May, and Roger Ford.
The family will begin receiving friends on Thursday, January 1, 2026 in the Stopover Freewill Baptist Church, 53990 State Highway 194 E,
Stopover, KY 41568, with visitation from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. with a special service beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Honoring services will be held in the church beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 2, 2026 with Pastor Larry Rife, Pastor Benny Freeman, and Bro. CJ Stacy officiating. Burial will then follow in the Sanson Family Cemetery of
Majestic, KY with family and friends serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Willie Charles, Jody Ferrell, Reco Ferrell, Toby Mounts, Franklin Wolford, Doug Bryant, Bobby McCoy, David Daniels, and DJ Cline.
