It is with great sadness to announce that Melvin Allen Kier, 78, passed away peacefully at his home in Roswell, NM on October 12, 2023.
Melvin was born January 21, 1945 in Swedesboro, New Jersey of Melvin Kier Sr. and Louise (Bright) Kier. He married Jean Carol Furnival December 4, 1965 in Deptford, New Jersey and they had four children, Stephen, Brian, Sandra, and Sean. He served in the army during the Vietnam War. After his military service, he joined the Carpenter's Union in New Jersey. Melvin was an exceptional carpenter that was known for his attention to detail. In 1979, he moved his family to New Mexico, where he used his carpentry skills to build 2 of his family homes as well as assisting in the construction of his daughter's home. Soon afterward, he began a new career in the natural gas industry. He was employed at Transwestern, Yates Petroleum, Enron, and Agave Energy. He retired from Agave Energy in 2015.
Melvin is survived by his sister, Myrtis (Kier) Zych; his 2 sons Brian Kier and Sean Kier (wife Kathryn); 1 daughter, Sandra Chappell (husband Chad); 3 granddaughters, Kaleigh, Brooke, and Ella; and 1 grandson, Jack.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Charlie Schoener, his wife, Jean (Furnival) Kier in 2019, and his son, Stephen in 1972.
Melvin was a quiet, kind, and gentle man. He was always willing to help anyone. He loved baseball, classic cars, and horse racing. He was an example of a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and just an all-around good person. He will be greatly missed and forever in our hearts.
A private memorial is being planned by the children of Melvin and Jean to lay their parents at rest next to their son, Stephen, in New Jersey.
