Melvin Smith Obituary

Melvin Dwain Smith (Dwain), 83, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away peacefully at home with his beloved cats, Boots and Buddy, by his side on Tuesday, December 10, 2025.

Dwain was born in Boonville, Missouri, to Dixie June (Piatt) Smith and Melvin George Smith. He grew up in Blackwater, Missouri, where he attended elementary school before graduating from Boonville High School. He went on to study at Missouri Valley College, earning his degree and beginning his career in education. Following college, he taught school in Glasgow, Missouri, where he touched the lives of many students with his patience, humor and steady guidance.

In 1962, Dwain married Wanda Waller, and together they had two daughters, Jody Beynon (Jim) and Jami Pryor (Fred). He was a proud grandfather to grandson, Landon Beynon.

Dwain spent most of his life doing what he loved, buying and selling antiques, conducting estate liquidations, and connecting with people from all walks of life. He had a keen eye for history, a love of storytelling, and a gift for discovering treasures, both in objects and in the people he met along the way.

Dwain had a personality larger than life. You always knew where you stood with him; good, bad or indifferent. Someone you definitely wanted on your side because he had a way of getting things done that most would think impossible. His business sense kept people on their toes and his ability to make a buck even on the most dismal of deals was truly amazing. He will be remembered for his quick wit, intelligence and deep pride he had for his family. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched and in the memories held close by those who loved him.

Dwain was a fighter. He bravely battled cancer for 15 years, showing resilience, strength and determination until the end.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Dixie Smith.

A special thanks goes out to Jake Rogers for his help, care and kindness.

Memorial Service 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, December 28, at The View at Briarcliff Event Space, 4000 N. Mulberry Drive, Kansas City, MO 64116.

Here's an expanded version:

"I'm deeply grateful for my friend Dwain, who left an indelible mark on my life over 40 years. His unwavering trust, support, kindness, and empathy drew me in, and his infectious smile and stories brightened every encounter. I'll never forget when he was there for me, not with financial help, but with a listening ear and wise words that boosted my confidence. After reconnecting, courtesy of Greg, we shared stories and laughter, and I marveled at his uncanny ability to find humor even in challenging times. Days before he passed, I had the gift of telling him how much he meant to me - a true friend who made a real difference. Though I couldn't be at his memorial, I'm sharing my thoughts, grateful for the impact he had on me and so many others. Dwain's legacy lives on through us, and he'll be deeply missed.

Dwain was a character. He invited me to come back to West Plaza and reopen my shop there a few weeks ago. He always wanted to do business and keep his going, and thought I could help build the neighborhood. So sad. I'm not sure if this will happen now or not. He was so excited about it. Someone let me know.

Dwain was a great friend... always there for you when you needed him. We recently reconnected after over 25 years being out of touch with one another. I´m so glad I had the time in the last year to spend with and enjoy this beautiful man´s company.
I will always remember Dwain and the memories we shared with great fondness.
God Bless Dwain and all who loved him at this time of loss.
I will miss you, Dwain.
