Melvin Stokes entered eternal rest on Monday, December 30, 2024, at the age of 91. He was a native and resident of New Orleans, LA. Melvin was a graduate of L. B. Landry High School class of 1951, where he was a proud member of the Buccaneer marching band. After graduation, he served his country in the United States Air Force as a photographer for 4 years and gained employment as a barber for a short time. Melvin later became employed with the United States Postal Service, from which he retired in 1992. Beloved husband of the late Lettie Irene Bonner Metcalf Stokes. Loving father of Marla Stokes, Melvin Anthony Stokes of Iowa City, IA, and Doris Stokes Steib. Grandfather of Brian Everett of Slidell, LA, Anthony Clay Stokes of Columbia, S.C., and Tessa Anderson. Great grandfather of Brandon and Victoria Everett of Slidell, LA and Rylee Capri Davis. Son of the late Beuford Stokes, Sr. and Stella Brew Stokes. Brother of the late Ned Stokes, Cyprian (Hilda) Stokes, Doris (Percy) Brown, Richard (Inez) Stokes, Beuford (Gertrude) Stokes, Jr., and Lillie Mae (Louis) McGee. Father in law of Rev. Larry P. Steib, also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. Relatives and friends of the family, also pastor, officers, and members of Mt. Pilgrim 4th Baptist Church, Olive Branch Baptist Church, St. Mark Baptist Church, and all neighboring churches; employees of United States Post Office, Jen Care Senior Medical Center, and Specialty Hospice are invited to attend the Home Going Celebration at Mt. Pilgrim 4th Baptist Church 429 Newton St. New Orleans, LA on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. Rev. Larry P. Steib officiating. Visitation will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the above-named church. Interment: Westlawn Cemetery - Gretna, LA. Arrangements by Davis Mortuary Service, 230 Monroe St. Gretna, LA. To view and sign the guestbook please go to davismortuaryservice.com.
