Melvin Boyd Williams, affectionately known by his family and friends as Mel, was born December 23. 1932, in Morrison, Oklahoma to Leona and Earl Williams. They moved to Perry where he attended Perry High School.
Mel met the love of his life, Evelyn Rupp, at age 14. He saw her on the square and said, “I’m going to marry her!” Mel worked at the Perry movie theatre growing up. He joined the US Army and while he was in the service, Mel and Evelyn were married in Los Cruses, New Mexico. Shortly after their marriage, they had a son, Len. Four years later Kathy was born and soon after, the family moved to Sacramento, California. Mel worked for KXTV. Mel’s career was always in telecommunications. Mel was involved in Len’s life with quarter mile racing pontiacs. He really enjoyed those times.
He was also involved in Kathy’s life. He loved going to see her compete in cutting horse events. Unfortunately, Kathy had to sell her horse, Star Misty. A few years later, Mel bought her back with a foal by her side. The foal, named Stroke, is 28 years old. Kathy brought Stroke by Mel’s bedside in the house a few nights ago to say “goodbye.” Mel had several horses through the years that he loved. Mel had three grandsons whom he loved and attended many of their events through the years, including basketball and football.
Another special person in his life was Pam Carl, who loved and took care of Mel and was a dear friend.
Survivors include his son, Len Williams; daughter, Kathy Mowery McCoy; son-in-law, Mark McCoy; three grandsons: Hayden and Julia Mowery, Gavin and Cheyenne Mowery, and Sheldon and Ruby Mowery; and three great grandchildren: Marshall Layne Mowery, Mavery Jean Mowery and Tatum Joyce Mowery.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Williams; brother, Marvin Williams; and mother and father, Leona and Earl Williams.
Visitation will be held on Monday, January 5, 2026, from 12-2pm at Dighton Marler Funeral Home in Perry, followed by funeral service at 2pm and interment at Zion Lutheran Cemetery at 3pm. Dighton Marler Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
