Melvin Leonard York

Melvin Leonard York, 76, passed away April 1, 2024, at his home in Jackson.  He was the son of William Leonard York and Cynthia Alice Harrod of Ingalls, AR.  He was one of five siblings. 

Melvin spent much of his life working for himself as a contractor specializing in remodeling homes.   He enjoyed working with his hands and gained much satisfaction from gardening and growing flowers.  He loved spending countless hours with HO model railroading, it was a very relaxing hobby.  He was very devoted to his friends of Bill W.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Nelson York as well as both of his parents, Mr. William York and Mrs. Alice Mulligan.

Melvin is survived by his loving wife of nearly 55 years, Francis Lynn Balentine York; two sons, Col. Brian York (Heidi) of San Antonio, TX, and Jason York (Erin) of Brandon, MS, and a daughter, Monica York of Brandon, MS.  He leaves behind his 3 sisters, Faye Forrest (Jerry) of Hermitage, AR, Judy York of Cookeville, TN, and Elizabeth Briley (Jim) of Wiggins, MS.  He leaves behind eleven beautiful grandchildren, whom he adored.   

There will be a Celebration of Life service held Sunday, April 7, 2024, at 2 pm at Chancellor Funeral Home of Byram. Family will receive the public beginning at 1 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made in his honor to Lakeshore Congregational Methodist Church in Byram, MS.
