Stephen R. Libenschek, affectionately known as Steve, passed away on March 4, 2026, at the Willow Creek Nursing Home in Byram, Mississippi. He was born on October 23, 1934, in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania to Stephen Libenschek and Catherine Chesnick Libenschek. He spent the last 28 years in Raymond, where he had made his home.
Steve dedicated over 53 years of his life to the Jackson Police Department and Hinds County Sheriff Dept., making a profound impact in his community. He was a pioneering figure as the first K-9 officer and also played a key role as a member of the SWAT unit. His commitment to public service exemplified his courage and leadership.
In addition to his distinguished career in law enforcement, Steve proudly served his country as a U.S. Marine, embodying the values of dedication and honor that defined his life. He was a firearms instructor and a gun enthusiast, having acquired significant expertise throughout his career.
Steve's life was marked by his deep love for his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Tommye W. Libenschek, with whom he shared 69 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they raised three beloved daughters: Vicki Libenschek Evans (Jay), Sherri Libenschek Penick (Durell), and Kelli Libenschek Helmick (Ken). He cherished his grandchildren, Matthew Stephen Reed (Ashlee), Ashley Alexander (Wesley), Kaiden Lombardo (Blaine), Keaton Walters (Hunter), and Angie Stewart (Chad), and found immense joy in their company. His legacy continues with his great-grandchildren, Kailee and Kaine Reed, Reed Alexander, Brandon Stewart, Kristi Druckenmiller, and Anthony and Avery Lombardo.
Steve was known for his love of family gatherings, often capturing precious moments on his RCA camcorder. He enjoyed watching war movies and spent many enjoyable hours reading. A faithful Christian, Steve lived his life in a manner that reflected his beliefs.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Stephen and Catherine Libenschek, and his sister, Patricia Dunn.
Steve will always be remembered for his unwavering love, his contributions to society, and the lasting impact he made through both his personal and professional life. His spirit will live on in the hearts of those who were privileged to know him.
