Merlene Hammett Cowan, 88, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away Thursday evening, July 31, 2025, in Weatherford, Texas.
Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 P.M., on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at the Wiley Funeral Home, 400 Highway 377 East in Granbury. A service of committal for Merlene will be held at 11 a.m., on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at Holly Hills Memorial Park in Granbury.
Merlene was born on July 23,1937 in Henderson, Texas to the late Clifford and Margie Hammett. Her early years were spent in the West Texas town of Whiteface, and the family returned to East Texas where she attended high school in Jacksonville and met her future husband, Boyce Wayne Cowan. On August 24, 1957, the two were married and had two sons, Phil and Mark. Along with raising her family, she had a 23 year banking career before serving 12 years as Administrative Manager for Granbury ISD. After retirement, Merlene served a 3 year term on the Granbury ISD School Board and volunteered for Southside Baptist Church's business office. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, and gardening at their lakeside home and attended many ball games and events of her treasured grandsons, Brandt and Logan. Most of all, Melene will be remembered for her deep faith and for the love she had for her family and friends. Her generous spirit will be greatly missed.
Merlene is survived by her sons, Phil Cowan and wife Carla and Mark Cowan and wife Terri, all of Fort Worth; and by her grandsons, Brandt Cowan and wife Jodi of Fort Worth and Logan Cowan of Dallas.
In addition to her parents, Merlene was preceded in death by her husband, Boyce Wayne in 2012.
