Merton John Phillips, known to most as "John", passed away peacefully at Anderson Hospital August 19th, 2025 surrounded by his loved ones.
John was born on October 12th, 1939 in Redding, California to father, Merton Phillips and mother, Lillian.

John was a devoted husband to his wife of thirty-seven years, Mary Claudette Phillips, a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, and loyal friend to many who knew him. John served in the United States Navy as a boilerman, and later spent many of his years on the road as a truck driver.

Anyone who knew John knew that he had a zeal for life, fun, and laughter. John took the utmost pride in his home and in his family. It wasn't rare to find John striking up a conversation with a stranger who would later turn into a friend. He loved watching the Dallas Cowboys, classic John Wayne Westerns, and working on home projects. He loved his dog, Sassy, traveling the United States with his wife, and most importantly, spending time with his loved ones. John never missed a party if he didn't have to, and many would agree that he was the life of the party. John never let his age change his outlook on life, frequently singing his famous rendition of "I Don't Need Your Rocking Chair". If he wasn't at the karaoke machine, you could find him two-stepping to George Strait. His memory lives on, though no one will ever be able to fill his boots. John will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Phillips; children, Carolyn Pirtle (Clary), Mark Clary and Clifford Womack; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The family is being served by Herr Funeral Home, 501 W. Main Street, Collinsville, IL.
