I greatly enjoyed teaching Spanish at Southwest after my long career in Memphis City Schools, and Mia remains one of my fondest memories from the SW years. I loved her intelligence, her energy, her constant desire to know more, understand more, contribute more, BE MORE VALUABLE TO OUR WORLD. My colleague and I still mourn her death but remember her with admiration and great affection.

Mia was an exceptional person: smart, kind, energetic and efficient, always trying to make things better for everyone. She was passionate about many civil and ethical causes but able to discuss difficult topics without hostility, using the great force of her mind and personality to seek areas of agreement. My colleague Joseph Carson and I had the privilege and pleasure of teaching Mia Spanish at Southwest's Union campus. Despite her already large skill set, Mia wanted always to expand her ability to reach and help other parts of our multi-community. She added depth and interest to our classes as she absorbed every morsel of knowledge we offered her. We nicknamed her "Mia the Magnificent" and were thrilled to see the wonderful things she led Memphis Tilth to accomplish. We are sending donations to Memphis Tilth to honor Mia.

My deepest sympathy to all of Mia's family and colleagues. I had the pleasure of knowing her through shared nonprofit work. A consummate professional, incredibly smart, fabulous instructor and presenter and so very kind to all, are descriptors I would give to Mia. I am confident that Sunday evening, she heard the words, "Well Done!" May you all find peace and comfort as you walk this very difficult path.

The Tennessee Chapter of the Sierra Club is deeply saddened by her passing. The contributions of
Mia´s time and talents made our organization not only stronger, but much more aware of environmental justice issues in communities across our state. We will not forget you, our friend. Hopefully you will be leading us again on the happy trails when we reunite on the other shore.
