Michael Altieri Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Dooley Colonial Home - Westfield on Oct. 26, 2023.
Michael George Altieri, 18, of Westfield, NJ, passed away on October 23, 2023. He was born on January 16, 2005, in Livingston, New Jersey and was a lifelong resident of Westfield. Mikey, as he was affectionately known, was an accomplished and award-winning artist. Despite being born deaf, he discovered a love for music, particularly enjoying the works of Doja Cat and Lady Gaga. He would even connect his cochlear device via Bluetooth to enjoy their music. Mikey was also an avid naturist who loved hiking with friends in the local mountains. He tended equally to plants and cultivated a thriving garden. No one could grow better basil than him! He found joy in exploring the parks, bridges, and museums of New York City, and had a talent for finding unique and stylish outfits, often accompanied by a matching bucket hat. Additionally, he found great pleasure in visiting the beach, where he would skillfully create sandcastle cities, defending them against the rising tide.
Mikey's passion for art and architecture began at an early age through his experiences with Minecraft and Roblox. He was always eager to express his creativity and explore new artistic endeavors.
Mikey is survived by his loving parents, Samantha and Frank Altieri, his brother Frank II, and his sister Sophia. He will be dearly missed by his maternal grandparents, Norma and George Yuro, as well as his maternal Uncles, Michael Yuro, Giovanni (Jessica) Arlia, and Aunt Ashley Nassiri. He also leaves behind his paternal Aunts, Dorothy Barbella, Letizia (Frank) Intervallo, and Michele (Lawrence) Romano, as well as many loving cousins and countless devoted friends. Mikey was preceded in death by his grandparents Vincenzina and Jean Fouchet, Armand and Janet Altieri, Uncle Anthony Barbella and Aunt Melissa Yuro.
Mikey graduated from Westfield High School in 2023 and was furthering his education at the Rochester Institute of Technology, pursuing a degree in architectural and civil drafting technology.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 29, 2023, from 4 PM to 7 PM at Dooley Colonial Funeral Home, located at 556 Westfield Ave, Westfield, NJ. Funeral services will follow on Monday, October 30, 2023, at 11 AM at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, located at 315 First Street, Westfield, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the following foundations: Donations made payable in memory of Michael Altieri to either Friends of Mindowaskin Park Inc., PO Box 87, Westfield, NJ 07091, to honor Mikey's love of nature with a tree or Summit Speech School, 705 Central Avenue, New Providence, NJ 07974. Contributions to these organizations will help support causes that are dear to Mikey's heart.
Please join us in celebrating Mikey's life and cherishing the memories we shared with him. He will forever be remembered for his artistic talent, love for nature, vibrant spirit and infectious smile.

Michael was a friend of mine. One of my favorite memories of him was during the short time I knew him at the Summer Transition Program (STP) the summer before my freshman year at RIT. We had a field trip to Seabreeze near the end of the program. It was absolutely miserable - raining, cold, and windy. Michael and I still went on 3/4ths of the rides together. Because it was a water park, I wasn't able to keep my cochlear implants on, and so when Michael and I were there, I wasn't able to hear anything at all. Despite this, Michael made the effort to practice sign together with me and try to communicate with each other throughout the day. We were freezing our butts off! He almost lost his red shades that day, and the bucket hat he had on (and the rest of BOTH of our clothes) were all soaked. It was a blast. We still had so much fun together going on those rides.

I would give anything to do that again with you, Michael. You said that if I ever came down to NYC, you'd show me around the city. You were so excited to be at RIT. You even said that for Halloween you'd go as the RIT mascot (a tiger). I think of you every time I walk by Ellingson Hall - not because of your end, but because of the time we spent together. We all miss you so much. You are so loved by your friends.

Samantha and Frank - we are heartbroken to hear this very sad news. Our daughter Sophia had the pleasure of knowing Michael at WHS - enjoying his beautiful energy day to day his senior year. I had the pleasure of watching Michael walk to school each day as I drove the kids to school- I loved his whimsical style and always thought to myself - that kids got a unique sense of fashion. But my favorite memory was watching him deliver a gift to one of the crossing guards near the end of school year! I was in the right place at the right time to watch this interaction- he crossed gave him a gift bag and then a huge hug!! If it wasn´t for his amazing style- standing forth I might have missed the whole thing. It still makes me smile. It´s this joy I will remember. Love and many hugs.
