Michael C. Altschuler, age 90, of West Hartford, Conn., passed away December 15, 2024, after living a robust and healthy life.
He was predeceased by his parents, Arnold S. and Dora Altschuler, and wife Cora, of 52 years. Mike is survived by his daughter Lynne of Newington and his daughter Debra and her husband Eric of Minneapolis; and his loving grandchildren, Elie (Emma) and Joshua.
Born and raised in Hartford, Mike graduated in 1952 from The Loomis Chaffee School, received a BA summa cum laude from Yale in 1956, and a master's in mathematics from Harvard in 1958. He was a Phi Beta Kappa, a member of the Society of Sigma Xi, and a fellow of the Society of Actuaries. Mike was an actuary at The Travelers Insurance Company for 36 years.
He met his wife Cora in Hartford, and they raised their family in their home in West Hartford for over 50 years. He was a devoted husband and father, and loved being "Poppie" to his grandchildren and grand puppies. In his last years, he lived at the McCauley, where he built a new network of friends, while reuniting with others and quickly becoming an active member of the community.
A brilliant man with an impeccable memory, Mike was an avid stamp collector, world traveler, and a lover of music, the arts, and food. He could be equally happy reading a book, watching a ballgame, attending the symphony, or spending time with friends and family. He also had a lifelong commitment to Judaism and regularly read Torah and volunteered at The Emmanuel Synagogue. He generously contributed to a number of philanthropic causes including The Ron Foley Foundation to help fund a cure for pancreatic cancer following Cora's diagnosis.
Funeral service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, December 17, 2024 at The Emmanuel Synagogue with Rabbi David J. Small officiating, 160 Mohegan Drive, West Hartford. The family requests memorial donations be made to The Altschuler Endowment at the Emmanuel Synagogue. Arrangements are entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary.
