His father was an immigrant to the United States, who fled the Ukraine prior to Joseph Stalin's extermination of 7 million Ukrainians in 1932.
After graduation from Cambria County High School in 1948, Mike was drafted into the Korean War. He served 2 years with the U.S. Army in Germany, repairing tank radios and other electronic military equipment. He was honorably discharged in1954. Years later, he revealed to his children that of the five (5) Army companies that were drafted out of Barnesboro, PA, only his (Charlie Company) returned from the war. After Mike returned home from the war, his desire was to find work and live simply with his parents. His eldest brother John, however, convinced him to come to Detroit with him to find work and get further education. It was soon after, Mike met his bride-to-be in Fraser, Michigan. And to this day, the wind-swept look of the Ford Mustang's tail is the artistic work of Mike.
