Michael Douglas Asher

Michael, 75, aka Superman, aka Magic Mike, was an inspiration to all who knew him or heard about his long
fight to live. He beat leukemia but succumbed to the relentless attacks on his body (Graft vs Host Disease) as a
result of his bone marrow transplant 7 years ago. Despite 39 hospitalizations, he prevailed time and time again
over things that should have killed him. His nurse, Rob, said one day, "Mike, you know about the cat with 9
lives? Well, you are on your 3rd cat!"
He loved all kinds of music, his kitties, pie, playing his guitar and harmonica, motorcycle rides with his buddies,
drawing, woodworking, dancing, flying airplanes, good Scotch, cruises, and most of all, his family.
After graduating from Georgia Tech in 1970 where he was president of Chi Phi fraternity, Mike began a
distinguished 21-year career in the Air Force. He was a pilot for most of those years (C-130, T-37, T-38) and
retired in 1991 as Deputy Commander of Basic Training for the United States Air Force. His favorite assignment
was 5 years at Rhein Main Air Base in Germany.
Before he got sick in 2015, he spent 8 years as a volunteer in the burn unit at Brooke Army Medical Center. He
was a dedicated Krav Maga practitioner, gym rat, and patient ballroom dance instructor. Mike loved riding in
the Hill Country with several area motorcycle groups and was a proud member of the Patriot Guard Riders,
honoring fellow vets at their burials.
Mike is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sandra Pruett Asher, children Allison Andrea Asher, Stephanie Michelle
Asher, and Ryan Christopher Asher. Other survivors include his dear sister, Lisa Asher, who was his bone
marrow donor, and niece Atlantis Asher.
A short service will be held on Thursday, May 25, 2025 beginning at 11:30 a.m. at Alamo City Church, 6434 IH
35 North. Members of the Patriot Guard Riders will lead a procession at 12:30 p.m. to Ft. Sam Houston
Cemetery for a military burial ceremony at 1:15 p.m. In honor of Mike, a pie and coffee celebration of life will
follow from 2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. at the Royal Ridge Clubhouse, 5859 Royal Ridge Drive.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mike's name can be made to the Animal Defense League of San Antonio.
