Michael "Mike" W. Backus Sr.
Linwood, Michigan
Michael "Mike" W. Backus Sr., a cherished family man and respected community member, passed away peacefully at his family farm in Linwood/Crump, Michigan, on May 28, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on February 2, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late George and Monica (Byk) Backus, Mike grew up with a strong sense of family and community that would define his entire life.
Mike was united in marriage to the love of his life, Karen Dubay, on August 18, 1962, at St. Michaels Catholic Church. Their partnership was a testament to love and commitment until Karen's passing on September 28, 2017. Together, they raised a beautiful family, including their children Michelle, Mike Jr. and Rita, Mark and Marla, and Tim and Diane. Mike was a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, with two more joyously anticipated.
After completing trade school, Mike embarked on a fulfilling career as a pipefitter with Dow Chemical Company in Midland, where he was known for his creativity and handy skills. His work ethic and dedication to his craft were admired by all who worked alongside him. Upon retirement, Mike found great satisfaction in working on his farm, keeping a watchful eye on the crops and taking on the role of the family's go-to for parts and supplies.
Mike's brother, Dave, and his wife, Betty, survive him, along with his loving children and their families, in laws; Roy & Janice Piotrowski, Maggie Gaiser, Joe & Delephine Dubay, Ben & Joyce Conklin, Robert & Gayle Lardie, Leanne Balcueva, Bette Proulx, and John Downen. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Karen, his brothers Joe and George, his sister Christine, brother in laws; Harry Gaiser, Ernie Balcueva, and Joe Proulx.
A man of many interests, Mike enjoyed his trips to the casino, indulging in the thrill of scratch-off tickets during his road trips, and most importantly, checking on his family. He cherished spending time with his loved ones, and his presence at family gatherings was always a source of joy and comfort.
As a former faithful member of St. Valentine's Church, Mike's kind spirit and community involvement left a lasting impact on those around him. He was a man who could be best described as creative, handy, and kind qualities that he generously shared with his family and friends.
Funeral Services will be held Monday June 2, 2025 at 10 am from Lee-Ramsay Funeral Home with burial in St. Agnes Cemetery. Family will greet friends and family on Sunday from 3 to 7 pm and Monday 9 am until time of services.
