We are truly heartbroken to share the news that Michael A. Benevenia, a man of remarkable kindness and generosity, passed from this world on November 14, 2025 while surrounded by those he loved most. Michael's journey began on September 29, 1956 in Newark, NJ. He was raised in Irvington and Fords. Mike attended school in Woodbridge, and excelled academically and athletically. After graduating high school, Mike earned an Associate's degree in Marketing Art and Design from Middlesex County College and a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Education from Kean College. He enjoyed a long and fulfilling career at Prudential Financial. Mike was a man of many passions, with a deep love of history, music, sports memorabilia, nature, and lifelong learning. He traveled frequently visiting his favorite destinations such as Praiano on the Amalfi Coast, Panzano in Tuscany, Aruba, and Maine. Mike considered himself a lucky man, and tested his luck at any casino.
Mike was an exceptional human being, and grateful for a wonderful life. While words can hardly capture the impact of his life, he led by example, impacting others through his quiet strength, humility, faith, respect, and unwavering spirit. He cared deeply for others and the world. He lived his life with a deep sense of purpose and spiritual intentionality. He was a devoted husband, a proud father that took immense pride in the accomplishments of his children, a loyal brother, extraordinary brother-in-law, and an unfailing and trustworthy friend. Always placing others before himself, his lifetime of offering kindness, compassion, and gratitude for the benefit of others is a virtuous legacy of selflessness, and an inspiration. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Michael was predeceased by his father, Aldo Benevenia and his mother, Joyce Ferrara Benevenia. He is also preceded in death by his beloved father-in-law, Thomas Sperling, mother-in-law, Myra Sperling, brother-in-law, Terrence Dowling, sister-in-law, Kathleen Dowling, and nephew, Christian Dowling. You could always count on Mike to have a treat for Bella, Chester, Lukie, Sofie, and last but not least, Maggie, our neighborhood mascot.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Susan Sperling Benevenia, his loving children, Jon Benevenia and his wife, Beth, and Amanda Benevenia. He is also survived by his brother, Joseph Benevenia and his wife, Jana, his sister, Maria Kryla and her husband, Stan, his sister-in-law, Myra Bruno and her husband, Paul, sister-in-law Beverly Dowling, and brother-in-law Michael Dowling. He is also remembered by his loving aunt, Erma DiFabrizio, and Donata Ferrara and her husband George Leonard, Susan Caroselli and Robert Gillen, The DiMaio family, as well as cousins, nieces, nephews, and numerous friends. Of special mention are his exceptional bowling teammates that are close, supportive, caring friends.
Our family would like to take this time to express our deepest gratitude to family, and friends for their constant concern and support, the many gifts, and kind words expressed in the innumerable letters, cards, emails, and text messages not only to Mike but to our entire family. We also would like to extend a special thank you to Mike's physicians, Dr. Joseph Jurcic, Dr. Markus Mapara, Dr. Stephen Windsor, Dr. Anna Maro, Dr. Mihir Maniar, Dr. Claudine Carbone, Dr. Danielle Trief, Dr. Alan Tsai, Dr. Leonard Steiner, including their incredible staff, and so many more amazing physicians, nurses, technicians, patient care coordinators, at New York Presbyterian Columbia University Hospital and Riverview Hospital. We are appreciative of the angels at the infusion center at Riverview Hospital that provided compassionate care with the utmost professionalism, empathy, love, and kindness.
