Michael Stephen Betts died at home on May 31. He was born on February 6, 1946, in Washington, DC to the late Stephen Otto Betts and Lillian Frances Mitchell. He was the husband of the late Hazel Betts and his current wife Vicki J Betts. Michael was the stepfather of Shannon Allen and grandfather of Kiernan Allen. He is survived by his siblings Linda (Arnold) Burdick, Robert (Kathy) Betts, and predeceased by brother Stephen Otto Betts Jr. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Michael was retired from the Prince George's County Police department where he was a hostage negotiator. He was active in numerous organizations, including the Marine Corps League of Howard County, the Blue Knights, and the St. Andrew's Society. He could be found every Christmas collecting for Toys for Tots and was an avid collector of military memorabilia. Mike will be remembered for his clever wit, his generous hospitality, his love of all things Scotland (including single malt scotch), his loyalty to the Marines and the Prince George's County Retired Police Association, his infamous 4th of July parties for wounded veterans, his outlandish costumes, and his willingness to "show up" -whether it was for a friend's funeral or to read the names of the fallen at the Vietnam Memorial on Memorial Day weekend. A celebration of life will be held on July 19, 2025. Slàn leat, Mike.
