Our “Big Guy”, Michael “Mike” David Brotherton, fought his last courageous battle with heart disease and passed away peacefully on May 17, 2025. He was born November 06, 1969 to Mary and David Brotherton. He loved long strides of track, farming with his dad and complicated math problems which he completed heartily at Jefferson County High School. Mike was always generous with family and friends. Following three years in chemical engineering at the University of Tennessee and five years in the Army, he received a physics degree from Carson- Newman University. Both of his parents had worked and taught there in the Cancer Research program.
He is preceded in death by his father, David Brotherton; grandparents, Quince and Carroll Coile Brotherton; uncle, Jimmy Lynn; and grandparents, Herman and Louise Tyner Karasek of Washington, D.C.
Mike is survived by his mother, Mary Ann Karasek Treece; loving and devoted stepfather, Clarence “Buddy” Treece; sister, Cheryl (Ronnie) Phillips; aunt and uncle, Marty and Art Dees; aunt, Dorothy Karasek; and cousins, Liebe Rice, Liesl Dees, Michael Underwood and Christi Edge.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 21, 2025 from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. with a celebration of life to follow with Art Dees officiating. A 10:00 a.m. inurnment service will be held Wednesday, May 28, 2025 at the East Tennessee State Veteran’s Cemetery with East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard officiating.
