Michael Callaghan

Michael Callaghan, 95, of Erie, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was born in Bootle, England, on March 25, 1930, son of the late John and Julia Ann (Brennan) Callaghan. As a boy, he was evacuated to Southport during the German bombings of Liverpool. At 16, he joined the British Merchant Marines, beginning a lifetime of travel and storytelling filled with imagination and humor.
Michael married Teresa Southern in 1955, a lifelong family friend whose mother helped deliver him. Together, they raised five sons moving from England to northern Ohio, and finally settling in Erie, where he worked as Marine Superintendent at Codan Corp on the bayfront.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, John Callaghan; his eldest son, Michael Callaghan Jr.; and his beloved wife, Teresa, after nearly 50 years of marriage.
He is survived by his sons: Stephen (Michal); Thomas (Laurie); Christopher (Lisa); Patrick (Gwen); and daughter-in-law, Mary. Grandchildren: Andy, Heather, Shannon, Sean, Jim, Katie, Megan, Matt, Owen, Tess, Erin, Rory, Levi, and Erica; and great-grandchildren: Wesley, Maisie, Lily, Colin, Ryan, Ella, Claire, and Cecelia; along with many nieces and nephews.
Michael loved golf, Everton soccer, and cheering on the Browns and Indians - teams that tested his patience but never his loyalty. His wit, warmth, and cheeky humor will be deeply missed.
Services will be held at Calvary Cemetery Friday, November 14, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. followed by a celebration of life 3:30-6:30 p.m. at Calamari's on State Street. All are welcome. To send condolences please visit www.bruggerfuneralhomes.com.
