Michael William Callahan, 74 of Okeechobee, Florida, passed away on January 29th, 2024 at Trustbridge Hospice of Palm Beach County. Michael was born on July 19, 1949 in West Palm Beach, Florida. After Michael graduated from Cardinal Newman High School in 1966, he went on to earn an AA Degree at Palm Beach Junior College in 1967. Though he pursued a degree in education from Florida Atlantic University, he left before graduation to pursue what would be his lifelong career in insurance sales.
He leaves behind his wife, Lesley, and their child Devin who were steadfast advocates and supporters of his sobriety, having accomplished ten years living a sober life. His is also survived by his children, their spouses and grandchildren whom he shares with his first wife, Susan "Cooki" Scholes; they are Kelly Hewes, Michael Jr., Mary VanMatre and Bryan Callahan. In addition, he has a son Patrick from a previous relationship, Patrick Callahan who is married with children of his own.
He was the oldest son of Bernard and Theresa Callahan who along with two younger brothers James and John predeceased him. He is survived by his older sister Patricia Williams and younger siblings, Joseph Callahan and Julianne Schneider. He will be missed by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Michael was an avid athlete. When he was younger, he enjoyed playing football, running track, playing tennis and lifting weights. He continued to play tennis and lift weights until his health declined. In his early 20s, he was an alternate for the US Olympic Speed Walking Team and played tennis professionally in a few tournaments that allowed him to focus on one of his other passions, photography.
As a lifelong musician, he played many string instruments (banjo, violin, guitar and mandolin) and was the lead singer of the country music band: Mike Savage and the Country Sawgrass. When healthy, he enjoyed singing his favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd, Eagles and Willie Nelson songs for family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Okeechobee, Florida at a later date.
