Michael A. “Mickey” Cwalina passed away at home on December 14, 2025, in the house full of memories that he loved so much, including his beloved Elvis collection. Born and raised in Gardner, Mickey always cherished his hometown and the people he knew there. He was known for his long stories, quick wit, and love of conversation. Wherever he went, he seemed to run into someone he knew, and he cherished those connections.

He is survived by his daughters, Chelsea Cwalina (fiancé, Michael King), Nicole Cwalina (partner, Drew Chaisson), and Lacey Cwalina (partner, Pete Loescher), and his son, Jamie Cwalina. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Haley Cwalina, Kody Gallant, Kyle Duplacy, Bryton Cwalina-Collins, Brody Cwalina, Easton King, Emerson King, and Millie Chaisson, and his great-grandchild, Travis Blake. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Doris Cwalina.

A 1968 graduate of Gardner High School, Mickey dedicated much of his life to public service. He joined the Gardner Police Department in 1974 as a reserve officer, also serving with the Ashburnham Police Department and as a court officer for Gardner District Court. He received his full-time appointment in 1978 and spent most of his career as a detective in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. He later became one of Gardner’s first full-time narcotics detectives, helped establish the area’s first drug hotline, and contributed to the formation of the North Central Worcester County Drug Task Force.

In his earlier years, Mickey enjoyed golfing, bowling, and spending time with his police buddies and close friends. He also enjoyed catering with a good friend—a time in his life he frequently reminisced about. He had a deep love for food and truly enjoyed cooking for others, something that stayed with him throughout his life. He retired early in 1998 and later began repossessing vehicles, which allowed him to stay connected to the work and world he knew so well. He also worked as a blood courier for Athol Hospital, a job he truly enjoyed. He loved his collections and the memories attached to them, and he especially loved retelling stories from the past — stories that were always worth listening to.

Friends and family remember Mickey as a great guy — loyal, funny, and someone you could always count on. He was dedicated to his work and known for his integrity, but his humor was never far behind. Though his body grew tired, his spirit never did.

There will be no formal services per Mickey’s request—though his children insist he won’t get away without something. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Friends and family are encouraged to share their favorite “Mickey story” and photos on the memorial page.

In honor of something recently on Mickey’s heart, the family encourages donations to the Kenny Arsenault Scholarship Fund, awarded annually to a Gardner High School student in memory of Kenny Arsenault. Contributions help ensure the continuation of this important scholarship. Checks may be mailed to Gardner High School, Guidance Department, 200 Catherine Street, Gardner, MA 01440.

Arrangements are under the care of Mack Family Funeral Homes, Gardner Chapel, 105 Central Street, Gardner, MA.
