Michael Lawrence Deak

Michael Lawrence Deak, 82, of West Hartford, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on December 14, 2025. He was born in Torrington on December 16, 1942 to the late Joseph and Margaret (Marinkas) Deak. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Barbara (Kiehnle) Deak, daughter Jennifer Sherrange and grandson Bennett of West Hartford, and daughter Amy Guglietta and husband Matthew and grandchildren Lily and Wesley of Bristol; brothers John (Patricia), Joseph, Anthony (Marie), Stephen (Sandra), and sisters Margaret DeMars, and Anna Cerruto (Raymond); brother-in-law James Kiehnle (Barbara) and sister-in-law Sally Kiehnle. He also leaves behind many dearly loved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by his granddaughter Evelynn Kiehnle Deak, sister Theresa Menard, brothers-in-law Edmund DeMars, Howard Menard, and Richard Kiehnle, sister-in-law Joan Meyers, niece Elizabeth, and nephews Jeffrey and Matthew.

Michael grew up in Burrville and was a graduate of Torrington High School. He was a partner in J&M Roofing with his brother John and then was sole proprietor of Michael Deak Roofing for over 30 years. Upon retirement, he worked as sexton and security for First Baptist Church of West Hartford, where he was also a member for many years. He proudly served in the U.S. Army and is a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a hard worker who was adept at building and fixing practically anything. He enjoyed golf, bowling, and time spent outdoors. Michael will be remembered as an easygoing, caring, and generous person with a great sense of humor. Above all else, he cherished his family and loved spending time with them, especially his grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are welcome to join the family on February 14, 2026 at 10:30 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford for burial with military honors, followed by a memorial service at 11:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 90 North Main Street, West Hartford.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Michael's memory may be made to First Baptist Church of West Hartford.
