Michael John Donio, a beloved figure who served his community with commitment and compassion, passed away on May 8, 2025, at the age of 100 in Chesterfield, Missouri. Born on April 1, 1925, in Folsom, New Jersey, Michael lived a remarkable life. He served his country honorably during World War II and after, dedicated his career to law enforcement, ultimately rising to the esteemed position of Police Chief in Shively, Kentucky. His leadership not only shaped the police force but also left a lasting impact on the community he served.
In his personal life, Michael was cherished by many. He is survived by his daughters, Joanne Hammer and Melissa (Jerold) Pedigo, and his son, Matthew Donio, who will forever hold dear the memories of their father. Michael is also survived by his step-daughters Lisa, Lori, and Lynn Shambro, who embraced him as family. Michael also leaves behind his former wife, Linda Donio.
Michael’s legacy continues through his grandchildren: Mike (Celia), Chrissie (Kelly Staley), Kimberly, Brady, Kendall, Coleton, and Brookelyn, and his eight great grandchildren all of whom he cherished so very much. Michael was also "Pop-pop" to Madison, Zachary, and Aidan.
He is preceded in death by his son, Michael Donio, and his daughter, Michelle Boyd, whose memory is lovingly cherished by her husband Randy. He was also predeceased by his loving partner of 21 years, Shirley Shambro, and his parents, Frank and Anna Donio, whose guidance shaped the man he became.
Michael’s visitation will take place on Monday, May 19, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Newcomer Funeral Home of West County in Chesterfield. A Mass will follow at Ascension Catholic Church in the little Chapel at 11:00 AM, allowing family and friends to gather in celebration of a life well-lived and to honor his enduring legacy of love and service. Following Mass, he will be laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery, Edwardsville, Illinois.
As we reflect on Michael's life, we remember a man whose laughter filled rooms and whose lively spirit entertained many. He will be dearly missed, but his memory will continue to guide and inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him.
