Michael Tyrone Downes was born on October 15, 1951, in
Wilmington, Delaware, to the late Raymond E. Sudler and Gladys H. Groce. On April 21, 2025, surrounded by his loving family, Michael peacefully completed his earthly journey and ascended to his eternal home.
He met and married the love of his life Mary A. Downes and they were on their journey for 50 years. They raised their two sons (Michael L. and Marques R.) in Wilmington before eventually relocating to New Castle, Delaware.
Michael was raised with love and care by his special aunt, Beatrice Downs. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Isaac and Edith Downes; his parents, Raymond E. Sudler and Gladys H. Groce; his stepfather, Dennis "Benny" Groce; his brother-in-law, Donovan R. Haile; his sister-in-law, Valerie E. Washam (Gary Sr.); and his beloved daughter, Mecca D. Downes.
At an early age, Michael committed his life to Christ, joining Shiloh Baptist Church, where he served faithfully as President of the Youth Choir and transported church members to and from services. As members of the 2nd Sunday InFellowship Ministry, he and his devoted wife, Mary A. Downes, administered Communion to the sick and shut-in. His favorite scripture came from Psalms 1:1–6, a chapter that reflected his deep-rooted faith.
Michael graduated from P.S. DuPont High School in 1969 and pursued further education at Delaware Technical & Community College, majoring in Transportation Management. His professional career spanned 45 years with DuPont, where he worked as a Micro-Filmer and Product Information Representative. He traveled early in his career before settling at the Chestnut Run Plaza location, where he spent his final 33 years. He retired proudly in November 2014.
Michael had a passion for life and a multitude of interests. He loved fishing, bowling, watching NBA and NFL games, playing cards, spending countless hours in Atlantic City and Delaware Park, traveling, cooking, and taking great pride in his spotless, shiny sports truck. He was known for hosting lively fish fries and crafting his famous fish casserole and homemade rolls, which he humorously claimed were "so good, they'd make you want to smack your momma." His unconditional love extended beyond his family and friends to his cherished pets, Boz the Rottweiler and Meadow the Welsh Corgi.
Michael leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Mary A. Downes; two sons, Michael L. Downes (Crystal) and Marques R. Downes (Autumn); a sister, Geraldine Brown; seven treasured grandchildren: Brianna, Leilani, Jyaire, Melody, Aubri, Gabriella, and Aiden; a sister-in-law, Cynthia Hamlin (Vandrick Sr.); along with a host of loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Michael's life was a testament to faith, family, friendship, and love. His spirit will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
