Michael J. Dunne, age 80, of Mooresville, NC, died peacefully in his sleep at the Gordon Hospice House, Statesville, NC on May 24, 2025 after an eight year battle with cancer. He was born in Rahway, New Jersey on April 21, 1945. Michael spent over 30 years working as an assembler for A.S.C.O. (Automatic Switch Company) in Florham Park,
NJ before retiring to Mooresville, NC in 2010.
At a time when many girls did not go to college, his mother Lina attended Trenton Teachers College majoring in Mathematics and Science. She then worked as a College Professor, all the while being a single mother and working towards a doctorate in Mathematics Education. Michael shared his maternal grandfather's love of trains, baseball and clocks.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Woodruff-Dunne; his daughter Kathleen Dunne; his sister Linda Dunne, and her wife, Brenda Goodman; as well as his stepbrother Richard Walter, and stepsister, Barbara Walter-Kruger.
He was predeceased by his parents Joseph Dunne and Lina R. Walter; as well as his stepfather Reinhold Walter; and his nephew Jon Organ.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks to honor Michael's wishes for donations to be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, since Michael strongly believed that no child should have to go through what he did.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am Friday, May 30 at James Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour prior. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Community Cemetery.
