Sister Michael Ellen Carling OP

04/22/1933 - 10/21/2025

CARLING, OP, Sister Michael Ellen entered eternal life on October 21, 2025. She was born and raised in Grand Rapids and faithfully served 72 years in religious life as a cherished member of the Dominican Sisters. She was 92 years old. She earned a B.A. in History and a Master's in Religious Studies from Aquinas College, as well as a Master's in Library Science from Rosary College.
Throughout her ministry, Sister Michael Ellen devoted her life to education, serving as both a teacher and principal before spending more than 30 years as a librarian. She was known as the perfect librarian, helpful, patient, and a true resource of information. Her teaching career also took her to New Mexico, where her passion for learning and her care for others continued to inspire students and colleagues alike.
Sister Michael Ellen loved reading, photography, history, and travel. She lovingly cared for her mother for more than 20 years and supported her sister, Nancy, with deep devotion. Dependable, kind, honest, and compassionate, she was a gifted storyteller who brought joy and wisdom to every conversation.
She deeply loved her Dominican life, remaining ever grateful for the support, encouragement, and friendships of her community. Sister Michael Ellen will be dearly missed by her family, her Dominican Sisters, and all those whose lives she touched through her faithful service and gentle spirit. May she rest in God's eternal peace.
Sister Michael Ellen will repose at Marywood Chapel of the Word, 111 Lakeside Dr. NE, with a Remembering Service on Saturday, October 25, at 9:00 am and a Funeral Mass to follow at 10:30 am. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Memorial in Sister Michael Ellen's name may be made to the Grand Rapids Dominican Sisters.
