It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michael Richard Garrahan, who passed away on Saturday, September 20th, 2025, at the age of 79. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Michael lived a life defined by service, dedication, and unwavering love for his family.
Born on April 10, 1946, Michael was the son of the late Florence (Vietz) Garrahan of Bridgewater, Massachusetts and the late John Edward Garrahan, Jr. of Providence, Rhode Island. He graduated from Central High School in 1964. Shortly after, he proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1966 to 1968, demonstrating the quiet strength and commitment that would shape the rest of his life.
In 1969, he joined the Providence Police Department, where he served with honor for 18 years before retiring in 1987. He then began a second career with US Airways, where he worked for 20 years. His time there fueled his passion for travel and allowed him to create lifelong memories with his family.
Michael was the beloved husband of the late Patricia Marie Garrahan of Providence. Together, they shared a life filled with love, laughter, and family traditions. He especially treasured family vacations to Disney and Aruba and was always happiest when surrounded by his loved ones.
Above all, Michael was a devoted family man who never missed a school event, dance recital, or family gathering. His steady presence, kind heart, and quiet humor were constants in the lives of those who loved him.
He is survived by his two sons: Stephen Garrahan and his wife Jennifer of North Smithfield, and Ryan Garrahan and his wife Gloria of Lincoln. He was the proud and loving grandfather of six adoring grandchildren: Courtney, Michael, Lorelai, Lorenzo, Caroline, and Layla.
Michael also leaves behind his sister, Sharon Blake of Warwick; two brothers: William Garrahan and his wife Arlene of Texas, and John Garrahan of Providence; along with several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews-all of whom he loved dearly. He was predeceased by his brothers Wayne Garrahan and James Garrahan and his sister Elaine Sheehan.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the
American Diabetes Association, a cause that was close to Michael's heart.
Michael Richard Garrahan lived a life of purpose, honor, and deep love. His legacy will live on in the hearts and memories of all who were lucky enough to know him.
Relatives and Friends are invited to gather for Michael's Committal Service and Military Honors on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at 11:15 in the administration building parking lot at the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery,
Exeter, RI, and then will proceed to the chapel for 11:30 a.m.
