74, beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away on October 4, 2024.
Michael is survived by his beloved wife, Anna; his daughters, Lauren (Hal) Geisser Blatt, and Nicole Karen Geisser; his grandchildren, Madeline Blatt, Elise Blatt, Brinley Hallett and Greyson Hallett; and his sisters, Patricia Dicks and Susan Geisser.
Michael attended LaSalle Academy, where he was an All-State member of the swim team. He received a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the University of Rhode Island, and studied Nominative Political Theory at Berkley University, while also learning woodworking and furniture-making in Oakland, CA. He received his Master of Science in Environmental Engineering from Northeastern University.
Michael was a professional engineer and a licensed site professional. His first company was CISTAR Associates in East Providence which he started and worked with his father Russell Geisser. It was there where he became involved in projects in Beverly and Salem Massachusetts. He went onto join Beta Engineering before starting in 2001, with Richard Hittenger, Alliance Environmental (AEG), an environmental engineering and consulting firm working all over New England, retiring in 2010.
Mike struggled for many years with primary lateral sclerosis (PLS), but never let it stop him from living a full life. He loved to travel, driving across the U.S. and traveling around the world. He was an avid golfer and a member of Metacomet Golf Club. A talented writer, Michael wrote a memoir, Adjustments, about his storied life and living with PLS, which will be published posthumously. Over the course of his writing career, Mike honed his craft through a number of organizations, including The Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, RI; Grubstreet Center for Creative Writing in Boston, MA; and the editors at The Writer's Hotel, Brunswick, ME, all through which he made many life-long friends.
Michael had a great appetite for life, figuratively and literally, with a special love of ice cream and sushi. When he first fell in love with Anna, he told her, "I can have fun in a paper bag." He shared that sense of fun with family and friends. All who knew him are encouraged to remember Michael's extraordinary enjoyment of life and the wonderful sense of humor he brought to all he did.
The family will be having a private memorial at a later date. His friends are encouraged to offer memorial donations to Spalding Hospital, Boston, MA; Rhode Island Food Bank; and Partners for Youth with Disabilities, Inc. Online guestbook available at:
