Michael Groene Obituary

Michael R. Groene, a resident of Fulks Run, VA passed away on January 11, 2026 following a heart attack. He was 63 years old.
Michael was born January 30, 1962 in Ames, Iowa, the son of Robert Groene and Alice Groene. He attended northern Virginia grammar and high schools before attending Shepherd College in West Virginia. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and Business Administration in 1984 from Sheperd.
Also in 1984, Michael joined the economic consulting firm of L. E. Peabody & Associates, Inc. where he spent the next 42 years. Michael was an integral part of L. E. Peabody & Associates, Inc. and his work included numerous fact-finding field trips with the objective of determining a railroad's cost of handling trains over specific line segments. He worked extensively with the Rail Traffic Controller ("RTC") model and developed simulations of short-line, regional and Class I railroad operations. These simulations involved translating real-world railroad operating infrastructure and operating practices into RTC specific simulation inputs. He used the RTC model in support of rate cases before the Surface Transportation Board, as well as for infrastructure investment analyses. But Michael was much more at home outside, working with his horses and on his farm.
Michael is survived by his wife Ginger Moore Groene, his brother, David Groene and his three nieces, Victoria Groene-Zeigler, Alexandra Groene and Katherine Wine. Michael was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Elizabeth Groene.
Michael leaves behind a legacy of hard work, a zest for life, a tremendous personality, a humorous inner being that will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. A celebration of his exceptional life will be held on March 22 of 2026. This will be held at 12378 Hopkins Gap Rd. Fulks Run Va 22830 at high noon.
