Michael F. Gross, 72, of Galesburg, Illinois, died unexpectedly Monday, April 21, 2025, in the emergency room at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.

Mike was born May 29, 1952, in Galesburg, the son of Stanley F. and Dorothy M. (Tonkin) Gross. He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1970. He attended Carl Sandburg College for a couple of months where his greatest achievement was learning to play pitch. He served from October 16, 1972 to October 10, 1974 in the US Army, stationed in Germany for his entire tour. Honorably discharged from the Army, Mike proudly worked for Burlington Northern, and later BNSF for 41 years in the car department. He rose to the title of car shop foreman following in the footsteps of his father.

On November 7, 1981, Mike married Rebecca Sue Nelson. She survives, as do their three children; Sara (Timothy) Gray, Bradley Gross, and Megan Gross all of Galesburg. Mike is also survived by his beloved five grandchildren; Dylan Pedigo, Conner Pedigo, Riley Gross, Mason Gross, and Lydia Gross. He leaves behind two sisters; Sandra Allison of Galesburg and Marlene (Dan) Davis of Mission Viejo, California; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and of course, grand dogs. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Susie Hare, and her husband, Bill Hare; his brother-in-law, Kenny Allison; and his precious pup, Lucy.

A proud veteran, Mike was a longtime member of Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285, serving the past 4 years as commander. He was instrumental in the reformation of the American Legion Post #285 Baseball Team.

Mike was a lifelong loyal Chicago Cubs fan and an avid Chicago Bears fan. He was often found tinkering around his garage and tending to his lawn. He also enjoyed road trips and weekly breakfast with friends on Thursday. He was fond of all things “classic,” particularly rock music and cars; especially his green 1949 International pickup.

Mike will long be remembered for his quick wit and fun-loving personality. Most of all, Mike loved being with his family and spending time with grandchildren and attending all of their events.

Visitation is Saturday, April 26, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory in Galesburg, with military rites conducted at 1:00 p.m. A celebration of life will follow at the Thomas Legacy Center until 3:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post #285 Baseball Team.
