Michael Helmig Obituary

Michael Alan Helmig, a dedicated law enforcement professional and cherished family man, peacefully passed away at home in Hebron, Kentucky, surrounded by his beloved family on January 27, 2026. Born on July 25, 1959, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Michael lived a life marked by commitment, service, and love.

With an impressive career spanning 43 years in law enforcement, Michael served as the Boone County sheriff for 27 years, earning the distinction of being the first sheriff in Kentucky to rise through all the ranks. His tenure was characterized by significant contributions, including his pivotal role in coordinating the merger between the Boone County police and Boone County sheriff’s office. He was also instrumental in the implementation of School Resource Officers in schools, ensuring a safer environment for students.

Michael was known for his focused, disciplined, and driven personality. He approached all aspects of his life with meticulous attention and was lovingly recognized as the "director of fun" by his family. His commitment to family was evident through the many vacations he planned, ensuring enjoyable experiences and cherished memories. Hobbies such as fishing, coaching football for 17 years, umpiring youth baseball, swimming, and bodybuilding were a testament to his active lifestyle and passion for engaging with others.

Michael’s legacy will continue to thrive through his beloved wife of 34 years, Bonnie Helmig (nee Reed), and their children: Traci (Aaron) Millson, Brandon (Elizabeth) Helmig, Amy Kallmeyer, Paige (Michael) Meade, and Lexi Helmig. He was also a proud grandfather to Brendon Millson, Nathan Millson, Isabelle Burger, Addyson Welch, Alex Burger, Logan Kallmeyer, Palmer Meade, and Hazel Meade, as well as a great-grandfather to Henry Millson, Evelynn Millson, and DJ Ebarb.

He is survived by his siblings: Sherri Lamm, Katrina Zinni, Nina Helmig, Scott Helmig, and Monique Helmig, along with a host of other family members and friends who will remember him fondly.

Michael was preceded in death by his mother, Donna Jean Poole, and his father, Alan Helmig.

Visitation will be held on February 3, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 5:00 PM at the First Church of Christ - Burlington Campus, located at 6080 Camp Ernst Rd, Burlington, KY 41005.
