Michael "Mike" David Hicks
March 30, 1975 – May 9, 2025
Michael "Mike" David Hicks, age 50, of Seguin, passed away on May 9, 2025. Born March 30, 1975, in Houston, Texas, to Marylee (Jankowski) and Billy David Hicks, Mike was a proud Texan, a devoted husband and dad, and a man whose pride in serving his nation was evident to all.
After graduating from Klein Oak High School in Spring, Texas, in 1993, Mike began his military service in the U.S. Army Reserves as part of the 327th Chemical Company. He was a 74D Chemical Operations Specialist, a role he proudly held throughout his career. He later continued his service in the Texas Army National Guard in Seguin, where he was assigned to the 36th Infantry Division and deployed to Kosovo, where he served with honor and dedication. Mike valued his time in the military deeply, dedicating over 13 years of his life to defending his country. The strong bonds of brotherhood and sense of purpose he found in serving were especially meaningful to him. He achieved the rank of Sergeant and served with honor until January 2007.
Mike was a faithful member of First Baptist Church. He was actively involved in church ministries, including the ramp team, and participated in mission work alongside his two sons. One of the highlights of his service was helping rebuild a roof and flooring for a home in Louisiana that had been devastated by a hurricane-an experience that reflected both his servant's heart and his deep commitment to helping others.
Throughout his adult life, Mike was a skilled electrician. Early in his career, he also worked as a golf instructor and delivered medical equipment. He then spent many years in the electrical trade, serving various residential and commercial businesses before dedicating 10 years of his expertise to Martin Marietta and Ash Grove.
When he wasn't working to support his family, Mike enjoyed road trips, camping, fishing (especially in Rockport), cooking, woodworking, football, and taking care of his beloved '97 Jeep Wrangler. He was also passionate about music-particularly the Beatles, Misfits, classic rock, and Motown from the '50s and '60s. Most of all, Mike cherished time with his sons, Matthew and Ryan, finding immense joy in watching them pursue their passions, from Matthew's six-man football games to Ryan playing his electric guitar.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Cheryl Hicks; sons, Matthew Hicks and Ryan Hicks; brother, Joe Hicks and wife Michelle; sister, Sharon Hicks; niece, Samantha Hicks; nephew, Hunter Schmidt; mother-in-law, Dorothy (Sommer) Goodman and husband Rocky; father-in-law, Brian Schmidt and wife Trea; brother-in-law, Chris Schmidt and wife Angie; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members, and friends.
A memorial service celebrating Mike's life, including military honors, will be held on Friday, May 30, 2025, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Brice Mandaville and the Reverend Jeremy Roy officiating. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.
Mike will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his selfless service, and his generous spirit. His legacy of faith, devotion, and service to others will live on in the many lives he touched.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, to use for the Ramp Ministry and or the Youth Mission Trips Ministry, 1314 E. Cedar St., Seguin, Texas, 78155.
