Michael Wayne Johnson Sr., beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away in the early morning hours of Sunday, September 21, 2025, at St. Joseph's Hospital. He was 70 years old.
Michael was born on February 2, 1955, at the Naval Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, to the late John Harry and Eva Johnson. A native of
Savannah, Georgia, Michael lived a life full of love, family, and hard work.
He proudly served his country in the United States Navy and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Later, he joined the Carpenters Union and worked on Phase II of the Plant Vogtle expansion in Augusta, GA. From a young age, Michael was blessed with an extraordinary gift for building-his skill allowed him to construct a home from the ground up with unmatched craftsmanship. He was one of those rare people who could fix anything. Michael loved telling stories, spending time with his grandchildren, and making people laugh. He was generous to a fault and would give you the shirt off his back.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, his brother John R. Johnson, and his nephew Shane Johnson.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his children: Michael Wayne Johnson Jr. (Christy) of Brunswick, GA; Eva "Christy" Bumpers (William) of
Savannah, GA; John Harry Johnson (Jamie) of Metter, GA; and bonus daughter Lori Holton (Alvin) of Rincon, GA. He was a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren: Alexander Johnson (Keila), Olivia Sheppard, Kristin Johnson, Brittney Johnson, Stephanie "Kay-Kay" Johnson, Leighyana Johnson, Cashious Wayne Johnson, Carson Johnson, and William "Boonte" Bumpers. He was also blessed with three great-grandchildren: Mia Martin, Grayson Scott, and Wednesday Johnson. Michael is also survived by his sisters: Rebecca Ribera, Wanda O'Neal (Henry), and Sharon Batayias; along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. His two closest friends, Bo Batayias and Pat Hardin, held a special place in his heart and remained by his side through the years. Special mention must also be made of his beloved cats, Reese Cup and Trouble, and his bonus pup-pal Boomer, all of whom he loved dearly and brought him joy and companionship.
Michael will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his love for his family, his sharp wit, and his incredible ability to build and create. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on through the many lives he touched.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Goshen Road Baptist Church, 1323 Goshen Rd., Rincon, GA. Officiating will be Cory Moore, with the eulogy delivered by Mark Ribera.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to help cover burial expenses at a later date.
