Michael Mattson Obituary
Michael graduated from Ontonagon High School in 1980 where he excelled in football. After graduating high school he attended Gogebic Community College for 1 year in the building trades. He then transferred to Michigan Tech University where he graduated with an Associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology. He then worked for a short time in Rockford, Illinois before he got a job at UP Engineering & Architects as a Civil Tech until 2002. He started his own business, Dirtworks Contracting in 2000 part time, and later fully committed to his business until the present. He was proud of his career and his accomplishments.
Mike loved to coach hockey and girls softball when his children were younger. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, trapping, watching his grandkids play sports, working on his hobby farm and spending time at his hunting camp, but mostly he loved being with his family and his friends.
Michael is preceded in death by his parents Waino and Norma (Hietala) Mattson. He is survived by his significant other Laura Basney of Ahmeek, his daughter, Jessica (Nic Sladek) Mattson of Laurium, his son, Brandon (Karen) Mattson of Laurium, step-children Stuart Peterson, Kendra (Kevin) Coppo, Sheila (Brent) Marin, and Brenda Peterson, and grandchildren McKenzie, Dylan, Isabella, Chloe, Aubrey, Ellie, Ella, James, Renny, Keygan, Niiko and Liisi. He is also survived by his loving dog Bitsy.
A service for Michael W. Mattson will be held at the Siskiwit Reception Hall (which incidentally his company built) in Calumet, Michigan at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 9th, 2023. A visitation will be held on Friday, December 8th, 2023 from 4:00-7:00 pm at the Siskiwit Reception Hall.
The Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
