Michael McCartney Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jan. 29, 2026.
Dr. Michael J. McCartney, age 63 passed away suddenly on January 11, 2026, leaving behind a family and community who loved him deeply and will miss him beyond words.

Born on June 23, 1962, in Saginaw, Michigan to the late Patrick E. McCartney and Diane A. McCartney (Schomaker), Michael grew up in Bridgeport, Michigan, the eldest of three children including his two sisters, Ann and Trish McCartney. They were a close and loving family.

A lifelong learner, Michael attended St. Peter and Paul High School before continuing his education at Aquinas College, Wayne State University for Medical School, and Brown University, where he completed his fellowship. He was immensely proud to be a physician, and his calling to medicine was rooted in a genuine love for people. As a primary care physician specializing in internal medicine, Michael devoted his life to caring for others with patience, calmness, and compassion.

He owned and operated Newburyport Medical Associates and later helped found East Coast Clinical Research, where his work made a national impact during the COVID-19 pandemic, his research was a reflection of both his dedication and leadership during an extraordinarily difficult time.

Michael made his home in West Newbury, Massachusetts, with his wife, Melissa McCartney. Michael and Melissa met while both working at Roger Williams Hospital in R.I. They were married on September 27, 1996, and together welcomed their daughter, Emily McCartney, who was the absolute joy of Michael's life. Though they later separated, they remained connected and united in their love for their daughter.

Being Emily's father was his greatest pride. Emily's education was an absolute priority in Michael's life. He treasured every moment with her. From traveling together and sharing his love of golf their bond was filled with humor, warmth, and deep love. He also shared with Emily his appreciation for art, literature, antiques, and fine wine. Michael was an avid sports fan who enjoyed cheering on his favorite teams.

Michael had a deep faith and found comfort in attending church throughout his life, especially with his daughter. He grew up attending St. Ann's Church in West Newbury and most recently worshipped at St. Joseph's Church in Epping. He also loved simple joys going to the movies, appreciating beautiful things, and spending time with those he cared about.

An animal lover at heart, Michael rescued and adored many pets over the years, including black and yellow Labrador retrievers and his beloved cat, Carmen. His compassion extended to all living things.

Above all else, Michael was known as the calm in every storm. He was steady, thoughtful, and strong. The glue that held everyone together. When others were struggling, he knew exactly how to offer strength, reassurance, and peace.

Michael is survived by his wife, Melissa McCartney, his daughter Emily McCartney, his loving sisters Ann and Trish McCartney, his girlfriend Lisa Stubbs of 13 years and her daughters Izabella and Victoria and many extended family members, friends, colleagues, and patients whose lives were forever changed by his care and kindness.

Michael was one of the most giving people anyone could know. In his memory, the family encourages acts of generosity whether through donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or an animal rescue organization in honor of his love for dogs - so that his legacy of helping others may continue.

Though he is gone far too soon, the love, strength, and compassion Michael gave so freely will live on in all who were fortunate enough to know him.

I was a patient of Dr. McCartney's for over 30 years, and was shocked to hear of his passing at such a young age. He always explained things in plain English, and I was never rushed. I will miss him. Condolences to his family.

I remember when he first came to Anna Jacques hospital. It was in ICU that I met him. When he left he took my stethoscope with him. Mind you he had his own on. He walked around to the floors with two scopes around his neck. I called everyone who had been in ICU that day. I finally called his office and he had it still around his neck. He was so apologetic. He brought it back right away. He also taught me about osteoporosis and I followed through to check if I had it. I did and was so happy he told me to get it checked out. He was so easy to deal with as a nurse and he listened to you.

My deepest sympathies to Dr. McCartney´s family. He was my physician for over 20 years and I will miss him dearly. He was a wonderful, caring and quietly compassionate man. He will be missed by so many.
