Michael E. McCorkel

Michael E. McCorkel, 77, of Chesterton, Indiana, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2025. Born on October 12, 1947, Michael (Mike) lived a full and impactful life that touched the hearts of many. Mike was the beloved husband of Dianne McCorkel for 53 years and is survived by his wife; their four children, Karyn Cruz (Eric), Wendy Young (Chris), Cindy Waltz (Jeff), and Tim McCorkel (Marishia); and his cherished 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Loretta McCorkel, as well as his siblings David, Katherine, and Barbara. He is fondly remembered by his surviving siblings, Betty and Bill. As a Vietnam veteran, Mike served his country with courage and honor, earning both a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for his bravery. His service and sacrifices will forever stand as a testament to his character and dedication. Mike retired from a 42-year career with the railroad and was an active member of the Washington Evangelical Free Church of Valparaiso. His commitment to his church community reflected his generous spirit and deep love for helping others. Known for his skills in woodworking and small engine repair, Mike was always eager to lend a hand to those in need. He took great joy in wrestling with his nieces, nephews, and grandchildren, and his playful, joking personality was adored by everyone who knew him. Mike will always be remembered for his big heart, heroic service, and fun-loving spirit. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.A visitation for Mike will be held on Tuesday, January 14, 2025 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, IN 46304. A funeral service will be held the following day on Wednesday, January 15, 2025 beginning at 11:00 am, at the funeral home. Mike will be laid to rest at Chesterton Cemetery following the service.
