Michael McDowell, Sr., a cherished member of the community and a distinguished jockey, passed away peacefully at his home in Louisville, Kentucky, on September 10, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones. Born on November 16, 1948, in Pleasureville, Kentucky, Michael's remarkable journey through life was marked by his passion for horse racing and his deep commitment to his family.
At the young age of 16, Michael achieved a significant milestone by winning his first Thoroughbred Horse Race, which launched what would become a prestigious riding career. He raced throughout the United States, with notable accomplishments in Indiana and Kentucky. His exceptional skills on the racetrack earned him the leading Jockey title at Ellis Park in Evansville, Indiana, a title he proudly held for an impressive 10 years after retiring from active racing. Over his illustrious career, he accumulated 19,337 starts, with 2,517 first-place finishes, 2,290 second-place finishes, and 2,274 third-place finishes. Michael took great pride in these achievements, alongside the joys of being a father and grandfather.
Beyond his racing accomplishments, Michael was a devoted family man who created lasting memories with his loved ones. His family will forever cherish the many trips they took together to Gatlinburg, as well as their joyous Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations. Fishing was another beloved activity that brought them closer, adding to the bonds of love and laughter that defined their time together.
Michael's interests extended beyond the racetrack; he found joy in betting on horses, spending time with family, traveling, indulging in Whitman's Chocolate Candy, and enjoying movies. He was also an avid fan of U of L Sports. His warm spirit and zest for life endeared him to many.
He leaves behind a loving family that includes his son, Michael (Victoria) McDowell, Jr.; his daughter, Lelia (Brian) Austin; his brothers, Doug (Bobbie Lou) McDowell and Russell (Karen) Parrish, Jr.; his sisters, Thelma Parrish, Alma (Roscoe) Allen, Janice Downey, Sharlene Booth, and Jennifer Clevenger; as well as his granddaughters, Chloe and Ellie Austin, Lily and Myla McDowell. He is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews, all of whom will carry his memory in their hearts.
